BARMARA CHAIRMANS REPORT 2009/10

This year has seen the coldest winter for many a year. For the first time in our history we had to cancel a meeting and several activities.

Also this year we have seen two of our previous Chair persons, a secretary and several members with  health problems We wish them all well.

The club is still the place to be as our growing membership requests keep flowing in. We now have 136 full members and 125 Associate members. We are still accepting new members, as we still hope to move to Beechwood. This has been the case for three years now. The information to date seems to be that MBC has taken over the hall from Persimmons. The management committee for the hall are still not satisfied that all their requests have been met. A fence between the hall and the childrens play area has yet to be built. We are still none the wiser as to the cost of the hire of the hall or what its fittings are going to be. Until these are resolved your committee can not even consider a move.

Now to the events of the year. We have seen Brian's choice of speakers for the year and I must compliment him on the varied and entertaining program. From our very own MBE Geoff Figgett , Bob Ogley with the "wind of change", Ann Chance saddle sore in Montana and ending the year with A forensic Response to the Tsunami. This being only a sample we experienced throughout the year.

This year has seen us continuing quiz nights thanks to Maurice. A new evening event was arranged, a Barn Dance. This went down very well and was well supported.  We continue to organise sessions of ten pin bowling. Due to a drop in numbers towards summer this is now being concentrated on the winter months only. Petanque has been able to resume this summer thanks to Ken Comber and this is of course followed by a nice lunch in the Red Start PH . The Art club has I believe a full class now and is going from strength to strength thanks to the support of members Brian Cornish and Sheila Malthouse. A new activity has started this year ‘New Age Kurling' by Dave Mayger. This has become so successful that( thanks to Gloria Rayment who arranged a grant from Grass Roots) we now are the proud owners of five sets of our own equipment..

A big thank you to those members who have continued to provide the monthly walks. They are well supported and always finish with an optional lunch at the local hostelry.

The monthly Coffee morning still proves to be very popular with a regular attendance of 30. This gives the opportunity for Associate members to come along and socialise. As this is also attended by the Outings ladies this is an ideal opportunity to book and pay for outings.

We also provide Line Dancing and Handicraft afternoons. These activities could do with a bit more support.

I will not say too much about outings and holidays as I'm sure that will be covered by the outings ladies report. I would like to thank you all for supporting the Outings, Holidays and activities we provide.

Our Web site provided by Maurice has proved to be popular with  several hundred hits recorded every month. The monthly newsletter is now emailed to a quarter of the membership. This is also useful for late cancellations or changes to outings or activities.

I have tried to make the committee more visible to the membership. At meetings they now introduce the activities they organise and you can put names to faces. I also hope you feel you can approach them at anytime. Suggestions are always welcomed.

With the recession and cut backs, next year will pose some challenges. The committee are already putting together a varied programme. So as they say watch this space.

For all those hard working committee members I have failed to mention,  I thank you for your invaluable input to making this club so successful As I stated earlier I think your club is very healthy and going from strength to strength.
